COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Bangor University is structured in two parts, designed to provide both comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical research experience. In Part 1, students must complete 120 credits from a range of modules that cover essential topics in criminology, criminal justice, and related social issues. These modules include Research Process and Meaning, which introduces students to key research methodologies and approaches, Transnational Crime, which examines crime across borders, and Climate Change and the Politics of Climate Justice, highlighting the intersections between environmental and criminal justice issues. Additional modules include Comparative and International Criminal Justice, International Criminal Law, Key Issues in Criminology, Key Issues in Social Policy, Nationalism, and Tackling Inequalities, allowing students to engage with both contemporary and historical perspectives on crime, justice, and societal structures. Part 2 involves a 60-credit Research Dissertation, where students undertake an independent research project on a criminological or criminal justice topic of their choice. Guided by an academic supervisor from the criminology and criminal justice team, students apply their research skills to critically analyse their chosen topic, synthesise evidence, and present their findings. The combination of taught modules and independent research equips graduates with advanced analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, preparing them for careers in research, policy, or professional practice in criminal justice and related fields.
