COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Zoology with Marine Zoology degree at Bangor University provides students with a thorough grounding in general zoology, covering the diversity, anatomy, physiology, behaviour, evolution, ecology, and development of all major animal groups, while offering the opportunity to specialise in marine-focused topics. In the first year, students study core subjects including ecology and evolution, principles of life, and organismal diversity, alongside practical and field skills and tutorials, with the choice of English or Welsh language delivery. The second year introduces compulsory modules in marine zoology and ecosystems, marine physiology and behaviour, evolutionary biology, and becoming a researcher, complemented by optional modules covering conservation, molecular biology, primatology, and field courses both local and international. Optional modules also allow focus on herpetology, ornithology, behavioural ecology, comparative physiology, invertebrates, and conservation practice. In the third year, students undertake core modules in the biology of fishes, dissertation research, and science communication skills, with optional modules enabling further specialisation in areas such as marine mammal science, freshwater ecosystems, molecular ecology, wildlife conservation, parasitology, reproductive strategies, and marine conservation and exploitation. Fieldwork, practical sessions, and research projects are integral throughout, providing students with hands-on experience and preparation for careers in marine biology, conservation, and environmental management.
