COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Zoology with Herpetology degree at Bangor University provides a specialist focus on reptiles and amphibians while maintaining a broad foundation in zoology. In the first year, students complete core modules in ecology, evolution, organismal diversity, and practical and field skills, supported by tutorials in English or Welsh. The second year builds on this with compulsory modules in introduction to herpetology, evolutionary biology, and research skills, alongside optional modules and field courses covering conservation, primatology, molecular biology, animal management, and global field experiences. Optional modules and field trips allow students to tailor their studies toward specific interests, including international conservation projects. In the third year, students undertake advanced herpetology, a compulsory dissertation, and science communication skills, with optional modules covering wildlife ecology, freshwater ecosystems, molecular ecology, evolution and development, parasitology, taxonomy, reproductive strategies, and venom research. Field-based learning, laboratory work, and research projects are integrated throughout the course. Students benefit from Bangor University’s extensive facilities, including dedicated reptile, rodent, and insect laboratories, the Treborth Botanic Garden, and Henfaes Research Centre. Strong industry links with conservation organisations, research centres, and government agencies provide opportunities for placements, volunteering, and professional networking, supporting careers in conservation, research, and environmental management focused on reptiles and amphibians.
