COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Zoology with Conservation degree at Bangor University focuses on understanding the causes of biodiversity loss and the strategies needed for effective conservation. In the first year, students build a foundation in ecology, evolution, organismal diversity, and environmental management, alongside practical and field skills, with the option to study in either English or Welsh. In the second year, the program emphasizes conservation principles and practice, evolutionary biology, and research skills, with optional modules including animal management, primatology, behavioural ecology, and various field courses both in the UK and internationally. Students can also choose additional modules covering herpetology, ornithology, physiology, invertebrates, and ecosystem interactions. In the final year, core modules cover UK wildlife conservation, wildlife ecology, and a dissertation, supported by science communication skills. Optional modules allow further specialization in freshwater ecosystems, molecular ecology, parasites and pathogens, taxonomy, reproductive strategies, human aspects of conservation, advances in conservation, climate change impacts, insect behaviour, animal survival strategies, and wetland ecology. The degree combines rigorous academic study with hands-on practical experience and fieldwork, preparing students for careers in conservation organisations, wildlife management, research, environmental consultancy, and policy. It also develops skills in scientific research, communication, and applied conservation practice, enhancing employability in a rapidly evolving environmental sector.
