COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Zoology with Animal Management degree at Bangor University combines the study of animal biology with practical skills and professional experience in animal care and management. In the first year, students study core subjects such as ecology and evolution, principles of life, organismal diversity, and practical and field skills, with tutorials in either English or Welsh. The second year builds on this foundation with compulsory modules in animal management, evolutionary biology, and becoming a researcher, alongside a wide range of optional modules including conservation, behavioural ecology, microbiology, physiology, marine zoology, and field courses in locations such as North Wales, Canada, the Caribbean, Arizona, India, and Florida. Field trips and practical experiences form a key part of the learning, providing hands-on exposure to wildlife and ecosystems. In the final year, students focus on advanced animal management, an animal husbandry placement, and a dissertation project, while also completing a science communication module. Optional modules allow students to explore topics such as wildlife ecology, taxonomy, animal reproductive strategies, venoms, fish biology, climate change, insect behaviour, survival strategies, animal ethics and welfare, and wetland ecology. The program equips students with theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and industry experience to pursue careers in zoos, wildlife parks, aquariums, research, conservation, and other animal-related sectors.
