COURSE CURRICULUM
The BSc (Hons) Woodland Management and Conservation degree provides a comprehensive, hands-on approach to understanding and managing woodland ecosystems. In the first year, students study core subjects including forestry in the twenty-first century, ecosystem function and services, and trees, forests, and global change, alongside practical and field skills for forestry and woodland management, and tutorials to develop academic and professional abilities. In the second year, the curriculum focuses on geospatial data skills, forest health, silviculture and inventory, woodland conservation, and a UK forestry study tour, complemented by the Becoming a Researcher module, providing students with research skills and exposure to real-world forestry practices. In the third year, students advance to forest and woodland management planning, forest ecology, professional practice, and undertake research projects or dissertations. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning, with choices including environmental policy, field courses, agroforestry, advanced GIS and remote sensing, catchment modelling, forest ecosystems and services, and urban forestry. Across all three years, the course emphasizes practical skills, ecological understanding, and scientific principles, preparing students to manage woodlands sustainably while addressing environmental, economic, and social challenges. Graduates gain the expertise necessary for careers in woodland management, conservation, environmental consultancy, and related forestry professions, with the knowledge and practical experience to make a positive impact on sustainable land management.
