COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Physical Geography and Oceanography degree at Bangor University provides a structured, three-year program designed to equip students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills relevant to terrestrial, coastal, and marine environments. In the first year, students study core modules including Earth Systems and Processes, Earth, Climate and Evolution, and Fundamentals of Oceanography, alongside practical training in environmental data analysis and science skills tutorials. Optional modules such as Geography Field Study, Anglesey Geology Field Course, and Marine Biogeochemistry allow students to gain early hands-on experience. In the second year, the focus shifts to advanced fieldwork and research skills, with compulsory modules including Geographical Fieldwork, Ship-based Field Course, and Ice and Oceans, complemented by the Communicating Science module in English or Welsh. Optional modules provide specialization opportunities in areas such as Climate Change, Natural Hazards, Catchment Processes, Pollution, and Estuary and Shelf Sea Processes. In the final year, students undertake a compulsory Rivers, Coasts and Oceans module and a dissertation, while selecting optional modules to tailor their studies to individual interests, such as Marine Pollution, Coastal Processes, Applied Geophysics, Marine Geology, Catchment Modelling, Geoarchaeology, Sediment Dynamics, and Oceans, Atmosphere and Climate. The program emphasizes field, laboratory, and analytical techniques, preparing graduates for careers in environmental management, research, and marine science industries.
