COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Ocean Sciences degree is structured over three years, with students taking 120 credits per year. In Year 1, core modules cover Earth, Climate and Evolution, Fundamentals of Oceanography, Environmental Data Analysis and a Science Skills Tutorial, available in English or Welsh, alongside optional modules such as Earth Systems and Processes, Chemistry in Environmental Science, Diversity of Marine Life, Anglesey Geology Field Course and Marine Biogeochemistry, giving students flexibility to tailor their learning. Year 2 builds on this foundation with compulsory modules in Estuary and Shelf Sea Processes, Remote Sensing and Geophysics, Tides, Waves and Marine Energy, and a Ship-based Field Course, complemented by a Communicating Science module in English or Welsh. Optional modules allow specialisation in areas such as Marine Ecology and Ice and Oceans. In Year 3, students complete a compulsory dissertation in English or Welsh, developing independent research skills, while choosing 100 credits from a range of optional modules, including Rivers, Coasts and Oceans, Marine Ecosystems and Processes, Marine Pollution, Sediment Dynamics, Coastal Processes Field Study, Sharks and their Relatives, and Marine Geology and Applications. Across all years, the degree emphasizes practical, field-based, laboratory and computational skills, preparing students to study and address environmental challenges such as climate change, marine pollution, coastal processes, and ecosystem management.
