COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Marine Science and Conservation at Bangor University provides a comprehensive study of the ocean’s physical, biological, and conservation aspects. In the first year, students gain a foundation in earth systems, climate, evolution, oceanography, marine biology, and environmental data analysis, alongside essential scientific skills and optional modules such as environmental management, marine biogeochemistry, and field courses. Year two builds on this knowledge with compulsory modules including principles of conservation, estuary and shelf sea processes, and a ship-based field course, supplemented by optional modules in climate change, natural hazards, pollution, conservation practice, remote sensing, and marine ecology, allowing students to tailor their learning. Communicating Science is a compulsory module offered in English or Welsh, developing students’ ability to present and explain scientific concepts effectively. In the third year, students focus on environmental policy, marine conservation and exploitation, and complete a dissertation in English or Welsh. A wide range of optional modules enables students to explore rivers, coasts, oceans, freshwater ecosystems, marine ecosystems, wildlife conservation, marine pollution, coastal processes, and marine geology. Across all three years, the course emphasizes practical experience, fieldwork, and research, equipping students with the scientific knowledge, analytical skills, and applied expertise needed for careers in marine conservation, environmental management, government agencies, and related industries.
