COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Marine Biology degree at Bangor University combines theoretical study with extensive practical experience to provide a comprehensive understanding of marine life and ecosystems. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge in ecology and evolution, marine biology, oceanography, and the diversity of marine life, while developing essential science skills and competence in environmental data analysis. Year two focuses on marine physiology, behaviour, and ecology, reinforced by practical fieldwork, including ship-based courses, while students also develop communication skills for scientific contexts. Optional modules such as estuary and shelf sea processes and tides, waves, and marine energy allow students to explore specialised topics. The third year integrates advanced study with independent research through a dissertation, supported by compulsory modules in marine ecosystems, extreme marine habitats, and an intertidal field project. Students can further tailor their learning with optional modules such as sharks and their relatives, marine mammal science, marine conservation and exploitation, fish biology and ecology, and larval ecology, providing opportunities to specialise in areas of particular interest. Across all years, the program emphasises hands-on learning, fieldwork, and practical applications, preparing graduates with the skills, knowledge, and experience required for careers in marine research, conservation, environmental management, and related scientific and policy sectors.
