COURSE CURRICULUM

The Marine Biology and Zoology program at Bangor University provides an in-depth understanding of animal diversity, physiology, behaviour, and ecosystem dynamics. In Year 1, students study foundational topics including invertebrates, marine zoology and ecosystems, marine physiology and behaviour, marine biology practicals, and marine ecology, alongside a module on communicating science in English or Welsh. These modules establish core knowledge and practical skills necessary for field and laboratory work. In Year 3, students undertake compulsory components such as an intertidal field project and a dissertation, allowing them to design and conduct independent research. A wide range of optional modules enables students to tailor their studies to their interests, including life in a changing climate, animal survival strategies, life in wetlands, marine conservation and exploitation, marine ecosystems and processes, and fish biology and ecology. Additional optional modules cover larval ecology, North American Atlantic Coast ecology, freshwater ecosystems, molecular ecology and evolution, parasites and pathogens, sharks and their relatives, and marine mammal science. The program emphasises hands-on learning through fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and practical projects, supported by access to diverse marine and terrestrial habitats. Graduates gain comprehensive knowledge of marine and terrestrial animal biology, ecological principles, and conservation, equipping them for careers in research, wildlife management, conservation, and environmental consultancy.
