COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Marine Biology and Oceanography degree at Bangor University provides a structured, three-year program combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to prepare students for careers in marine science. In the first year, students build a foundation through compulsory modules in marine biology practicals, earth, climate and evolution, diversity of marine life, and fundamentals of oceanography, alongside environmental data analysis and science skills tutorials, ensuring both scientific and analytical competencies. In the second year, students advance their knowledge with modules in marine physiology and behaviour, practical marine biology, a ship-based field course, and communicating science, while selecting optional modules such as estuary and shelf sea processes, tides, waves, marine energy, or ice and oceans to tailor their learning. The final year emphasizes independent research and specialised study, requiring a dissertation alongside optional modules covering marine conservation, ecosystems, fish biology, sharks, marine mammals, and oceanography topics such as rivers, coasts, oceans, marine pollution, sediment dynamics, coastal field studies, and marine geology. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience through laboratory work, field trips, and ship-based research, developing practical, analytical, and scientific communication skills. By graduation, students are equipped with the knowledge, practical expertise, and critical thinking required for professional roles in marine biology, conservation, research, and related industries.
