COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Geological Oceanography degree at Bangor University is structured over three years, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience to provide a comprehensive understanding of marine and coastal environments. In the first year, students complete 120 credits covering fundamental subjects such as Earth systems and processes, oceanography, marine biogeochemistry, climate and evolution, and fieldwork through the Anglesey Geology course. Students also develop key skills in environmental data analysis and scientific methods, with options to study in English or Welsh. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied marine science, including estuary and shelf sea processes, tides, waves and marine energy, ice and oceans, remote sensing, geophysics, and ship-based fieldwork, alongside a module on communicating scientific research. The third year emphasizes advanced studies in rivers, coasts, and oceans, sediment dynamics, marine geology, and coastal processes through field-based research. Students complete a dissertation in their chosen language, integrating research and analytical skills. Optional modules allow exploration of topics such as marine pollution and applied geophysics. Across all years, students gain hands-on experience with fieldwork, laboratory work, and data analysis, preparing them for careers in marine science, environmental management, coastal engineering, and research within both national and international contexts.
