COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography degree program is structured across three years, requiring students to complete 120 credits annually through a mix of compulsory and optional modules, offered in English and Welsh to enhance employability and cultural engagement. In Year 1, students take foundational modules like Earth Systems and Processes (20 credits) and Geography Field Study in North Wales (10 credits), focusing on Earth’s geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, with fieldwork in Eryri National Park and Anglesey. Compulsory choice modules include Environmental Data and Analysis (20 credits), introducing statistical methods and software like R, and Year 1 Tutorials (10 credits) for developing research and communication skills. Students also choose between Introducing Human Geographies (20 credits) and optional human or physical geography modules (20-40 credits), such as Britain: Blitz to Brexit or Ecosystem Function and Services. In Year 2, compulsory modules like Climate Change: Science and Impacts (20 credits) and Geographical Fieldwork and Research Skills (20 credits) emphasize climate issues and fieldwork, while Space, Power and Ideology (20 credits) explores spatial and identity dynamics. Students select language-choice modules like Becoming a Researcher (20 credits) and Sustainable Development (20 credits), alongside one optional module (20 credits) from choices like Geospatial Data Skills or Natural Hazards. Year 3 includes Critical Thinking in Geography (10 credits) and a compulsory Geography Dissertation (30 credits), allowing students to apply research skills to a geographical question. Students choose 60-80 credits from optional modules, such as Advanced GIS and Remote Sensing, Rivers, Coasts and Oceans, or Food Geographies, with some requiring prerequisites. Additional out-of-college options (up to 20 credits) include modules like Race Democracy and Political Ideology. Fieldwork, practicals, and assessments like essays, reports, and presentations foster critical thinking, research, and employability skills throughout the program.
