COURSE CURRICULUM

This undergraduate environmental science program provides a comprehensive grounding in ecological, physical, and social aspects of the environment across three years of study. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge through compulsory modules in ecology and evolution, earth systems and processes, ecosystem function and services, and environmental management and conservation. Academic development is supported through compulsory tutorials delivered in English or Welsh, while practical and field skills modules offer hands-on training in environmental sampling, data collection, and field-based techniques. Year 2 develops applied understanding with compulsory study in environmental conflicts, conservation principles, and conservation practice, alongside research skills training that introduces students to academic inquiry and project design. A wide range of optional modules allows students to tailor their studies to personal interests, including geospatial data skills, climate change science, plant and marine ecology, catchment processes, and human–environment interactions. Students may also choose from a diverse selection of residential and international field courses, as well as sustainable development modules offered bilingually. In Year 3, the focus shifts to policy, people, and professional skills, with compulsory modules in environmental policy, human aspects of conservation, and science communication. Students complete an independent dissertation project and select advanced optional modules in areas such as GIS and remote sensing, conservation science, forestry, freshwater and marine ecosystems, climate change, urban environments, and environmental governance. Overall, the program equips graduates with strong scientific, analytical, fieldwork, and communication skills for careers in environmental management, conservation, research, and policy.
