COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Conservation with Forestry degree provides a comprehensive, science-led education in forest ecology, conservation, and sustainable management, equipping students to address environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and deforestation. In Year 1, students study core modules including Forestry in the Twenty-First Century, Ecosystem Function and Services, Environmental Management and Conservation, and Trees, Forests and Global Change, alongside practical and field skills for forestry and woodland management, and tutorials to build foundational knowledge and skills. Year 2 deepens understanding with modules in Principles of Conservation, Forest Health, and Becoming a Researcher, combined with field courses such as Environmental Conflicts and the UK Forestry Study Tour, alongside optional modules in Geospatial Data Skills, Silviculture, Tropical Conservation, Sustainable Development, Catchment Processes, and Plant Diversity. Year 3 focuses on advanced topics including Forest Ecology and Forest Ecosystems and Services, and a substantial independent dissertation research project, with optional modules covering Environmental Policy, Field Courses abroad, Agroforestry, GIS and Remote Sensing, Human Aspects of Conservation, Advances in Conservation, Urban Forestry, and Science Communication Skills. The curriculum combines theoretical study with practical field experience, research-led learning, and professional skill development, preparing graduates for careers in forestry, conservation, environmental management, and policy, while also supporting progression towards Chartered Forester status through accredited professional pathways.
