COURSE CURRICULUM

The Game Design degree offers a comprehensive and immersive curriculum across three years, equipping students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for a career in the games industry. In Year 1, students gain foundational expertise in areas such as programming, mathematics, web technologies, and scientific writing. Modules like Game Studies and Game Design 1 introduce the core principles of game design, supported by hands-on experience using modern development tools. Students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and coding skills through modules like Object Oriented Programming and Imperative Programming Foundations.Year 2 builds on these foundations with a strong focus on industry standards and project-based learning. Students undertake Industrial Projects to understand software development lifecycles, team collaboration, and professional documentation. Core modules include Business and Enterprise Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms, and specialised game design subjects like AI and Game Design, Level and Mechanics, and Game Development. These modules emphasize designing, developing, and evaluating video games using tools like Unity or Unreal, as well as understanding AI techniques and gameplay mechanics.In Year 3, students complete an Individual Project and Research Methods module to prepare for professional or academic careers. Advanced modules such as Creative Visualisation, Advanced Game Development, and Game Studies: Game Bible deepen expertise in game aesthetics, mechanics, and industry practices. Game Production allows students to work collaboratively on a game prototype, business plan, and crowdfunding pitch, with expert feedback. A summer placement option enhances real-world experience. The program fosters creativity, technical ability, and an industry-ready mindset, culminating in a portfolio that showcases students’ readiness for careers in game design and development.
