COURSE CURRICULUM

The BMus (Hons) Music program provides a comprehensive and practice-led education that balances performance, composition, and musicological study. In Year 1, students complete 120 compulsory credits that establish core musical skills, including creative arts practice, melody, harmony, counterpoint, composition, studio composition, solo performance, and historical listening focused on music since 1850. Teaching is available through English or Welsh, allowing students to study in their preferred language. Year 2 continues with 120 credits and introduces music in context through genres and composers, alongside a flexible range of optional modules. These include ensemble performance, music teaching, community arts placement, musicology, advanced performance, and compositional pathways such as acousmatic and studio composition. Students must select at least 40 credits that prepare them for their final-year project, encouraging early specialisation in performance, composition, or musicology. In Year 3, all students complete a 40-credit Arts Project, choosing a pathway aligned with their interests, and a further 80 credits from advanced optional modules. Options include popular music studies, ensembles, notation and editing, orchestration, interactive sound and music, studio composition, and music in health and wellbeing. The program develops technical expertise, creative independence, critical listening, and professional awareness, equipping graduates for careers in performance, composition, education, arts management, community practice, or postgraduate study.
