COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modern Languages Studies program offers flexible pathways that allow students to study one, two, or three languages while developing strong linguistic, cultural, and analytical skills. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits, taking two 20-credit modules in each chosen language at beginner or advanced level depending on prior experience. Pathways differ by the number of languages studied, with Chinese available only in two- or three-language routes. Alongside core language modules, students may choose optional modules introducing language, linguistics, and transnational cultures. Year 2 builds on language proficiency through a compulsory 40-credit language skills module in each chosen language, including options such as French, German, Spanish, Chinese, or Italian. Students also select optional modules exploring national histories, literature, cinema, identity, and regional cultures, allowing academic specialisation alongside language development. In Year 3, students take advanced 20-credit modules in each language studied, combined with compulsory modules in translation and media analysis through the Press Dossier. Depending on their pathway, students also complete modules linking language to economy, teaching, journalism, publishing, or second language acquisition. The program emphasises multilingual competence, intercultural awareness, translation skills, and practical communication, preparing graduates for careers in education, translation, media, international business, public service, or further postgraduate study.
