COURSE CURRICULUM

This program combines Modern Languages with Philosophy, Ethics and Religion, offering an interdisciplinary pathway that develops advanced language skills alongside critical, ethical, and philosophical understanding. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits, including 40 credits of compulsory language study in a chosen language such as Chinese, French, German, or Spanish, ensuring progression at beginner or advanced level. Alongside this, students take 20 credits from Modern Languages optional modules focused on culture and intercultural skills, and 60 credits from Philosophy, Ethics and Religion modules exploring themes such as existentialism, ancient philosophy, religion, morality, and contemporary debates around belief, society, and meaning. In Year 2, students continue intensive language development through a compulsory 40-credit language module, complemented by 20 credits of Modern Languages options examining culture, literature, film, or national histories. The remaining 60 credits are drawn from Philosophy, Ethics and Religion, with modules addressing political philosophy, religion in the modern world, radicalisation, ethics, medieval thought, and social issues, with an optional work placement available. Year 3 is a compulsory year abroad, undertaken through study, work placement, or a British Council assistantship, allowing students to build fluency, cultural awareness, and professional experience. In Year 4, students complete advanced language study, choose from a wide range of optional Modern Languages modules including translation, cultural studies, or a language dissertation, and take 60 credits in Philosophy, Ethics and Religion, with options for a dissertation or work placement. The degree equips graduates with strong linguistic ability, critical reasoning, ethical insight, and international experience for diverse careers or further study.
