COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modern Languages and Media program combines language study with media theory and practice across four years, developing linguistic competence alongside critical and creative media skills. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits split evenly between Modern Languages and Media, studying a chosen language at beginner or advanced level while exploring foundational media modules such as journalism, visual culture, creative practice, screenwriting, and media production. A compulsory introductory module in either media or languages helps shape the balance of study in the first year. Year 2 continues the equal split, with students undertaking an intensive 40-credit core language module and a wide range of media options covering film production, journalism, ethics, politics, climate change, research methods, and documentary filmmaking, alongside language-related cultural and literary modules. Year 3 is a compulsory year abroad, completed through study, work placement, or a British Council English language assistantship, allowing students to strengthen fluency, intercultural awareness, and professional experience. In Year 4, students take advanced language modules, higher-level media options focused on digital media, journalism, advertising, documentary, and screenwriting, and complete a substantial dissertation or creative project in either Modern Languages or Media Studies. Overall, the program equips graduates with strong communication skills, media literacy, international experience, and cultural understanding, preparing them for careers in media, journalism, international organisations, creative industries, or further academic study.
