COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modern Languages and History program offers an integrated study of languages and historical analysis over four years, combining linguistic proficiency with critical understanding of the past. In Year 1, students take 120 credits split evenly between Modern Languages and History, studying a chosen language at beginner or advanced level alongside introductory history modules covering British, European, Welsh, and modern history, with options delivered in English or Welsh. Year 2 maintains this balance, with students completing advanced language skills modules, a wider choice of history options spanning medieval, early modern, modern, and global themes, and the opportunity to include archaeology and heritage modules. Students also select optional Modern Languages modules that explore culture, literature, cinema, and national histories. Year 3 is a compulsory year abroad, undertaken through study at a partner university, a work placement, or a British Council English language assistantship, allowing students to develop fluency, intercultural competence, and practical experience in a real-world setting. In Year 4, students return to complete advanced language study and higher-level history modules, with the option to undertake a dissertation in either History or Modern Languages. Overall, the program develops strong language skills, historical research abilities, and international awareness, preparing graduates for careers in education, international organisations, public service, cultural sectors, or further academic study.
