COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modern Languages and Film Studies program combines language learning with theoretical and practical engagement in film and media across four years. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits, equally divided between Modern Languages and Film Studies. They begin with a compulsory introductory module in either Language and Culture or Adventures in the Creative Arts, alongside core film language study and optional film practice modules such as visual culture, screenwriting, or media production. Students also study 40 credits of their chosen language, selecting beginner or advanced pathways in French, Spanish, German, or Chinese, supported by optional cultural modules where applicable. In Year 2, the balanced structure continues with a 40-credit core language skills module, compulsory film theory, and a range of optional film modules covering history, industry, production, documentary, and research methods, as well as optional language and culture modules. Between Years 2 and 4, students undertake a compulsory year abroad through study, work placement, or a British Council assistantship, gaining immersive linguistic and intercultural experience. In Year 4, students complete advanced language study alongside higher-level film options focusing on authorship, identity, distribution, documentary, or screenwriting. Students must also complete a substantial dissertation or creative project in either Film Studies or Modern Languages. Overall, the program develops strong language proficiency, critical film analysis, creative skills, and global awareness, preparing graduates for careers in media, cultural industries, international roles, or further study.
