COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modern Languages and English Literature program provides a balanced and in-depth study of language, culture, and literary traditions over four years. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits split evenly between Modern Languages and English Literature, including the compulsory Language and Culture: A Toolkit module, foundational training in Reading, Thinking, Writing, introductory literature options such as medieval, gothic, comedy, or children’s fiction, and 40 credits of language study at beginner or advanced level in a chosen language such as French, Spanish, German, or Chinese. Year 2 continues the equal structure, with students undertaking a 40-credit core language skills module, optional cultural or thematic language modules, and selecting at least two English Literature period modules covering medieval to contemporary texts. Year 3 is a compulsory year abroad, where students gain immersive international experience through study placements, work placements, or British Council assistantships, strengthening linguistic fluency and intercultural competence. In Year 4, students complete advanced language modules alongside English Literature options, including the opportunity to undertake a final year project or dissertation in one subject area. Optional modules allow further specialisation in translation, media, national and regional cultures, or comparative literature. Overall, the program develops strong communication skills, cultural awareness, and critical analysis, preparing graduates for careers in education, international sectors, media, and further academic study.
