COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Modern Languages and Criminology and Criminal Justice program combines advanced language study with a strong foundation in criminology, sociology, and criminal justice across four years. In Year 1, students build core knowledge through compulsory modules in Introduction to Criminology and Introduction to Criminal Justice, alongside 40 credits of language study in a chosen language such as French, Spanish, German, Chinese, or others at beginner or advanced level. Students also select optional modules in areas like politics, sociology, social policy, language, and culture to complete 120 credits. Year 2 develops subject depth with compulsory criminology modules covering crime and justice in modern Britain, criminological theory, and social and political research, while language proficiency is enhanced through 40-credit language skills modules. Students may also choose cultural and area studies options linked to their language. Year 3 is a compulsory year abroad, offering immersive experience through study at a partner university, a work placement, or a British Council assistantship, strengthening linguistic, professional, and intercultural skills. In Year 4, students complete advanced language modules and a compulsory criminology module on crime and punishment, supported by optional modules in areas such as organised crime, youth crime, serial killers, translation, media, ecology, or a dissertation or press dossier project. The program equips graduates with strong language competence, analytical skills, and international experience for diverse global careers.
