COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sociology undergraduate degree is structured across three years and offers a comprehensive exploration of key sociological theories, contemporary issues, research methods, and practical applications. In Year 1, students take 120 credits, including compulsory modules such as Introduction to Sociology, Social Policy and Society, Social Divisions, Introduction to Criminology, and Research Skills. These modules build foundational knowledge of society, social inequalities, crime, and research methods. Students also choose an optional module, such as "Britain: Blitz to Brexit" or "Vulnerability and Risk in Criminal Justice," to begin tailoring their academic interests.In Year 2, students again take 120 credits, with 80 credits from compulsory modules such as Gender Perspectives, Social and Political Research, Classical Social Theory, and Contemporary Social and Political Debates. These modules deepen understanding of gender, power structures, historical sociological thought, and current global and national issues. Research methods training becomes more advanced, preparing students for independent projects in Year 3.In the final year, students take another 120 credits, including a compulsory 40-credit dissertation. This capstone project allows them to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice, with one-on-one guidance from an academic supervisor. Additional core modules include Globalisation and Social Change and Theorising Society and Politics Today, which explore modern societal transformations and theoretical perspectives. The program offers a balanced mix of theory, research, and real-world context, supported by opportunities to study in either English or Welsh. It prepares students for careers in social research, policy-making, public service, and related fields by combining academic learning with practical, transferable skills.
