COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Sociology and Criminology and Criminal Justice program is a three-year degree requiring students to complete 120 credits each year. In the first year, students take core modules covering Introduction to Sociology, Introduction to Criminal Justice, Introduction to Criminology, Issues in Media, Journalism and Politics, Social Divisions, and Social Policy and Society, with options in English or Welsh. The second year builds on this foundation with compulsory modules including Classical Social Theory, Crime and Justice in Modern Britain, Criminological Theory, and Social and Political Research, alongside optional modules such as Work Placement and other social science topics like Education in Contemporary Wales, Poverty and Inequality, Gender Perspectives, Crime and the Media, Digital Policing, and Contemporary Social and Political Debates. In the third year, students study core modules on Policing, Security and the State, From Crime to Punishment, Theorizing Society and Politics Today, and complete a 40-credit dissertation in English or Welsh. Additional optional modules allow students to focus on areas such as Race, Democracy and Political Ideology, Housing Policy, Globalisation and Social Change, Climate Change and Environmental Politics, Tackling Inequalities, Crime and the Media, Perspectives on Youth Crime, Sociology of Music, and Language Rights. The program integrates sociological theory, criminology, and criminal justice, providing opportunities for research, practical experience, and specialization to prepare students for careers in social sciences, law enforcement, policy, and related fields.
