COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA in Politics and Social Sciences is a three-year program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of political systems, social structures, history, and contemporary debates. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits, with 60 credits from compulsory modules including Principles of Politics, Britain: Blitz to Brexit, and a choice between Social Policy and Society or The Welfare State and Social Policy in Wales. The remaining 60 credits are chosen from optional modules such as Issues in Media, Journalism and Politics, Introduction to Ancient Philosophy, Living the Good Life, and subjects in modern history, sociology, social divisions, and Wales in the Modern World. Year 2 continues with 120 credits, combining compulsory modules in Twentieth Century Ideas and Movements, Contemporary Social and Political Debates, and Social and Political Research or Research Methods, alongside 60 optional credits covering topics like the United States 1877-1945, Europe 1945-1992, poverty and inequality, classical social theory, crime and media, applied ethics, crime and justice, and the Age of Reform, with work placement opportunities available. In Year 3, students complete 120 credits, including a compulsory 40-credit dissertation in English or Welsh and 80 optional credits from advanced modules such as Twentieth Century Dictatorships, Race, Democracy and Political Ideology, hot wars of the Cold War, law, justice and rights, tackling inequalities, housing policy, globalization, power, crime and punishment, media, and Wales-related studies, with work placement remaining an option, preparing students for careers in research, public policy, media, or social analysis.
