COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA Music program at Bangor University offers a rich and flexible curriculum that allows students to specialise in various musical disciplines while gaining exposure to broader artistic contexts. In Year 1, students take 120 credits, primarily in music, with the option to study up to 40 credits in other subjects. Core modules include "Music Since 1850," exploring the evolution of Western music, and "Melody and Harmony," which develops foundational analysis skills. Another compulsory module, "Adventures in the Creative Arts," introduces interdisciplinary perspectives across music, film, drama, and media, encouraging collaboration and critical thinking.In Year 2, students again take 120 credits, including 40–60 compulsory and 60–80 optional credits. A central component is the "Genres and Composers" module, allowing students to engage with specialised topics based on staff research—such as Beethoven or The Beatles—through lectures, seminars, and student-led study groups. The course aims to sharpen research, communication, and analytical skills, with assessments including presentations and essays.Year 3 also requires 120 credits, with at least 80 in music. All BA Music students undertake a 40-credit Arts Project in either Musicology, Performance, or Composition. This capstone project involves independent research or creative work under supervision, complemented by workshops on promoting work and building employability. The final year offers flexibility through a selection of optional modules, ensuring students can tailor their studies to their interests and career goals. The structure supports the development of both subject expertise and transferable skills, preparing graduates for diverse careers in music and the arts.
