COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Music and Film program is an interdisciplinary degree that combines creative, theoretical, and practical study across music and film. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits, anchored by the compulsory Adventures in the Creative Arts module, which can count toward either subject. Students then balance their studies by taking compulsory film modules in film language alongside optional film choices such as creative practice, visual cultures, screenwriting, and media production. Music study in the first year includes 40 to 60 credits chosen from options such as music since 1850, studio composition, composition, melody and harmony, and solo performance, allowing students to build foundational skills in musical analysis, composition, and performance. Year 2 continues with 120 credits and includes compulsory film theory, supported by optional modules in film history, industry studies, short film production, documentary filmmaking, research methods, and screenwriting. Alongside film, students deepen their musical focus through options in teaching, ensembles, community arts, genres and composers, musicology, performance, composition, and studio-based work, ensuring a total of 60 music credits. In Year 3, students complete 120 credits including a 40-credit project or dissertation in either music or film, choosing pathways in research, creative practice, performance, or composition. The remaining credits are selected from advanced music and film options, enabling specialisation while maintaining a strong balance between both disciplines.
