COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Music and Creative Writing program offers an integrated interdisciplinary degree that balances creative practice, critical skills, and professional development across both subjects. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits, including a compulsory program module chosen from Adventures in the Creative Arts or Language and Culture: A Toolkit, before dividing their studies between music and creative writing. Core creative writing modules introduce prose, poetry, and critical reading, while optional pathways allow exploration of screenwriting or broader literary practice. Music options focus on foundational skills such as composition, studio composition, solo performance, melody and harmony, and musical history. In Year 2, students take an equal split of 60 credits in music and 60 credits in creative writing. Creative writing develops through modules on poetry, fiction, novels, non-fiction, experimental writing, and screenwriting, while music study expands into teaching, ensembles, genres and composers, community arts, and preparation for final-year projects through performance, composition, or musicology. Year 3 continues the balanced structure, with advanced creative writing modules exploring environments, the fantastic, journalism, non-fiction, and industry-focused screenwriting. Music options include popular music, ensembles, orchestration, studio composition, interactive sound, and music in health and wellbeing. Students complete a 40-credit final project, choosing either a Music Arts Project or a Creative Writing dissertation, allowing focused specialisation while maintaining interdisciplinary breadth.
