COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Media and English Literature program is a balanced joint degree that develops strong analytical, creative, and practical skills across three years. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits, evenly split between Media and English Literature, building core foundations in critical thinking, academic writing, and creative practice. Students begin with either a Media-focused introduction through Adventures in the Creative Arts or an English-focused approach via Language and Culture: A Toolkit, alongside compulsory English Literature study in reading and writing. Media modules introduce key debates in journalism, politics, visual culture, and media production, with options in screenwriting and creative practice, while English Literature options cover genres such as medieval literature, comedy, gothic writing, and children’s fiction. In Year 2, students deepen their subject knowledge with an equal balance of Media and Literature. Media studies explore journalism, politics, privacy, artificial intelligence ethics, documentary filmmaking, and research methods, while English Literature focuses on major literary periods from medieval to contemporary writing. In Year 3, students complete a substantial final-year project in either Media, English Literature, or Creative Writing, supported by advanced optional modules. These include literary history, digital journalism, advertising, documentary filmmaking, screenwriting for the industry, and cultural analysis, preparing graduates for careers in media, publishing, education, and related creative fields or for further study.
