COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Linguistics and the English Language program provides a comprehensive exploration of how language works, how English has developed, and how language is used in society. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through core study of language description in English or Welsh, alongside compulsory modules in English grammar, phonetics and phonology, meaning, language and culture, and essential research skills. This year develops key analytical abilities and introduces students to the tools needed to study language scientifically and critically. In Year 2, students tailor their studies by selecting from a wide range of optional modules that deepen understanding of linguistic structure, use, and variation. Options include sounds and sound systems, morphosyntax, semantics and pragmatics, discourse analysis, multilingualism, language research methods, the history of English, and Welsh-focused linguistics modules, allowing students to specialise according to their interests. In Year 3, students complete a substantial undergraduate dissertation in linguistics and the English language, written in English or Welsh, demonstrating independent research and advanced analytical skills. Alongside the dissertation, students choose from a broad selection of optional modules covering areas such as bilingualism, psycholinguistics, language change, second language acquisition, speech and language therapy, English as a foreign language, cognitive discourse analysis, and language in relation to identity and society. The program equips graduates with strong research, communication, and analytical skills suitable for careers in education, communication, research, publishing, and related fields, as well as for postgraduate study.
