COURSE CURRICULUM

The Linguistics and Psychology BA (Hons) at Bangor University combines the study of human language and cognition with an understanding of behaviour and mental processes. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge through modules covering stress and distress in health and mental health, brain and mind, human language and its disorders, criminal psychology, research skills, and core linguistics, with additional optional modules in English grammar, phonetics, and meaning. In the second year, the program deepens understanding of developmental, cognitive, biological, behavioural, clinical, and personality psychology alongside compulsory linguistics modules in sounds, semantics, and morphosyntax, with further optional modules including Welsh linguistics, discourse analysis, and second language research. The final year focuses on independent research through a 40-credit dissertation, complemented by optional linguistics modules such as bilingualism, psycholinguistics, second language acquisition, phonology, and language disorders, and optional psychology modules covering cognitive neuroscience, forensic psychology, counselling, brain development, literacy disorders, applied behaviour analysis, and psychosocial aspects of health. Across all years, students develop analytical, research, and practical skills through experimental methods, psychometric testing, language observation, and applied tasks, supported by state-of-the-art facilities including sound and recording laboratories, eye-tracking, and ERP equipment. This interdisciplinary degree equips graduates for careers in linguistics, psychology, education, therapy, research, and related fields.
