COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History and English Literature degree combines the study of historical change with close analysis of literary texts, allowing students to explore how societies, ideas, and cultures are shaped and represented over time. In Year 1, students build strong academic foundations through a compulsory history module introducing historical methods and an English literature core module focused on critical reading, thinking, and writing. Students then choose from a range of literature options covering medieval writing, comedy, gothic texts, children’s fiction, and language and culture, alongside history modules exploring British, European, Welsh, medieval, and modern history, with bilingual options available. Year 2 deepens subject knowledge and thematic understanding. Students study English literature across major literary periods, from medieval to contemporary writing, while history options span global, British, and European topics such as the Tudors, modern Europe, political ideas, empire, and material history. Limited archaeology and heritage modules offer additional interdisciplinary perspectives. In Year 3, students refine their interests through advanced history modules covering revolution, dictatorship, war, monarchy, Viking society, and Welsh and British history, alongside optional work placement opportunities. English literature study culminates in either a final-year literature project or advanced modules focused on key literary periods. Across all years, the program develops strong research, analytical, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, research, publishing, heritage, cultural industries, and public service.
