COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) History and Archaeology program offers a balanced and flexible exploration of the human past through historical study and archaeological investigation across three years. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits that establish core academic skills in historical analysis and archaeological understanding. Compulsory modules introduce historical thinking and the archaeology of the British Isles, while optional heritage study and a wide choice of history modules allow students to explore political history, medieval and modern Europe, British history, and Welsh history, with several bilingual options. Year 2 develops greater subject depth, with students dividing their study evenly between history and archaeology. History options span global, British, and European themes from the medieval to modern periods, alongside methodological training in historical research. Archaeology study includes compulsory engagement with archaeological theory and interpretation, supported by optional modules that explore prehistoric communities, graffiti and material culture, geoarchaeology, and heritage management. In Year 3, students complete a substantial 40-credit dissertation in either English or Welsh, demonstrating independent research skills. They then tailor their degree through optional modules in archaeology, heritage, and history. Advanced options include experimental and environmental archaeology, Roman and prehistoric societies, heritage and identity, revolutions, warfare, dictatorship, Viking studies, Welsh and British history, and thematic special subjects. Opportunities for work placement further enhance practical experience and employability. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, research, and practical skills suited to careers in archaeology, heritage, museums, education, research, and the wider cultural sector.
