COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Heritage, Archaeology and History program offers an interdisciplinary study of the past, combining historical analysis, archaeological methods, and heritage studies across three years. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits through a structured foundation that introduces core approaches to history, heritage, and archaeology. Compulsory modules focus on historical skills and interpretations of the past, alongside essential archaeology training that develops practical and methodological understanding. Students also choose from a range of history options covering political history, medieval Europe, modern Britain, Wales, and modern historical periods, with several bilingual module choices. Year 2 builds on these foundations by strengthening research and analytical skills through compulsory modules such as Making History and heritage-focused study, while allowing greater specialisation. Students select optional modules across history and archaeology, exploring themes such as early modern and modern global history, material culture, reform movements, Welsh history, and archaeological theory and science-based approaches. Opportunities for work placement support employability and practical experience. In Year 3, students undertake advanced study, combining optional modules in history and archaeology with compulsory elements in heritage, including Heritage and Identity, a substantial dissertation, and a specialist subject focused on a defined historical theme. Optional modules cover diverse topics such as revolutions, dictatorships, warfare, Vikings, Victorian Britain, Cold War conflicts, and experimental archaeology. Overall, the program develops strong research, analytical, and practical skills for careers in heritage, museums, archaeology, education, and related cultural sectors.
