COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Film and English Literature program combines the study of cinematic media with literary analysis, offering an equal balance of film studies and English literature across three years. In Year 1, students take 120 credits split evenly between the two subjects, beginning with a shared compulsory choice between Adventures in the Creative Arts or Language and Culture: A Toolkit, which shapes the balance of credits. Core study includes Reading, Thinking, Writing for English literature and Film Language for film studies, alongside optional modules introducing genres, themes, and practices such as medieval literature, comedy, gothic writing, children’s fiction, visual cultures, media practice, and screenwriting. Year 2 deepens critical and theoretical understanding, with compulsory study in film theory and a choice of major literary periods including medieval, early modern, nineteenth-century, and modern literature. Students further develop practical and analytical skills through optional film modules in film history, industry development, short film production, documentary filmmaking, and research methods, while literature options allow thematic exploration. In Year 3, students complete a substantial 40-credit project in either film or English literature, supported by advanced optional modules. Literature options focus on historical periods and publishing practices, while film options explore authorship, identity, distribution, documentary practice, and industry-focused screenwriting. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, creative, and research skills relevant to careers in media, publishing, education, and cultural industries.
