COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Film and Drama program offers an integrated study of film, theatre, and performance, combining practical production skills with critical and theoretical understanding. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits, beginning with Adventures in the Creative Arts, which can be counted toward either film or drama and helps shape the overall balance of the degree. Core study includes compulsory drama modules in theatre making and screenwriting, alongside a compulsory film language module that introduces visual storytelling and cinematic techniques. Students also select optional modules in areas such as media practice, visual cultures, modern European theatre, and contemporary media issues, allowing them to tailor their focus across film and drama. In Year 2, the curriculum develops analytical depth and professional skills through compulsory modules in film theory, professional practice, and theatre and performance. Optional choices expand practical and critical experience in short film production, documentary filmmaking, film history, industry studies, community arts placement, and screenwriting, with some modules available bilingually. In Year 3, students undertake a substantial 40-credit research or creative practice project in either film or drama, shaping the remaining balance of modules. Advanced options include directing, contemporary theatre practice, film distribution and marketing, auteur studies, documentary filmmaking, and screenwriting for the industry. Overall, the program prepares graduates for creative, academic, and professional pathways in film, theatre, media, and related cultural industries.
