COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature program offers a comprehensive exploration of literary history, genres, and critical skills across three years. In Year 1, students complete 120 compulsory credits that introduce key literary periods and approaches, including medieval literature, comedy, gothic writing, and children’s fiction. Core modules such as Reading, Thinking, Writing and Language and Culture: A Toolkit develop essential academic reading, writing, and analytical skills that form the foundation for later study. In Year 2, students continue with 120 credits, choosing at least 60 credits from core literature pathways that span early modern, nineteenth-century, modern, contemporary, and medieval literature. This year allows students to deepen their understanding of literary movements and historical contexts while developing independent critical perspectives. The remaining credits are selected from optional modules, enabling exploration of thematic areas such as Arthurian legends, superheroes, and climate change in contemporary culture. In Year 3, students undertake a 40-credit Final Year Project in English Literature, demonstrating advanced research and critical analysis skills. Alongside this, students select additional modules covering major literary periods, from medieval to modern and contemporary literature, as well as practical options such as e-publishing. Overall, the program combines historical breadth, thematic depth, and transferable skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, publishing, media, and related fields.
