COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Music program combines critical literary study with practical and theoretical engagement in music, allowing students to develop interdisciplinary analytical and creative skills over three years. In Year 1, students balance introductory study in both subjects, taking core English literature training in reading, thinking, and writing alongside selected literary genres such as medieval literature, comedy, gothic writing, or children’s fiction. Music study begins with foundational choices in performance, composition, harmony, and sonic art, supported by compulsory music history modules that introduce music since 1850 and approaches to musicology in either English or Welsh. Year 2 deepens subject knowledge through compulsory English literature modules covering medieval, early modern, nineteenth-century, and modern and contemporary literature. Music study advances through core modules in musicology, composition, performance, notation, and acousmatic composition, with optional opportunities in community arts, teaching, genres, and ensemble work. Students may also choose a thematic English literature option. In Year 3, students complete advanced study by taking 60 credits in English literature, including the option of a final-year project, alongside specialist literature modules spanning key historical periods. The remaining 60 credits focus on music, with advanced options in orchestration, composition, popular music, music in health and wellbeing, interactive sound, ensembles, or a substantial music project in performance, composition, musicology, or editing. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in the arts, education, creative industries, and further academic study.
