COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Literature and Drama program integrates literary study with practical performance and creative practice, offering a flexible and interdisciplinary learning experience across three years. In Year 1, students complete 120 credits combining foundational study in English literature and drama. Core modules develop academic reading, writing, and critical thinking, alongside practical introductions to theatre making, storytelling, and screenwriting. Depending on initial module choices, students balance credits between literature and drama, with options to explore genres such as medieval literature, comedy, gothic writing, children’s fiction, modern theatre, creative practice, and media production. Year 2 builds depth and professional awareness, with compulsory drama modules focusing on professional practice and performance identity, while optional modules allow students to engage with screenwriting, film production, documentary making, community arts placements, and Welsh-language theatre. Literary study continues through in-depth modules covering medieval, early modern, nineteenth-century, and modern and contemporary literature, with additional thematic options. In Year 3, students complete a 40-credit final project, choosing between an English literature dissertation, research dissertation, or creative practice dissertation. Alongside this, they select advanced modules in drama and literature, including directing, contemporary theatre practice, screenwriting for industry, documentary filmmaking, and detailed literary period studies. Overall, the program develops strong analytical, creative, performance, and professional skills, preparing graduates for careers in theatre, media, education, arts management, and related creative industries.
