COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Language with Creative Writing is a three-year degree that blends the study of linguistics with the development of creative writing skills, with students completing 120 credits each year. In Year 1, students build core foundations through compulsory modules in language and culture, English grammar, meaning, and introductions to language, alongside creative writing modules in prose and poetry. This year establishes key analytical, linguistic, and creative skills. In Year 2, students study compulsory modules in the history of English and discourse analysis, then tailor their learning through a balanced combination of creative writing and English language options. Creative writing choices include poetry and short fiction, novel writing, creative non-fiction, experimental writing, and screenwriting, while language options explore areas such as semantics, morphosyntax, multilingualism, language research, and teaching English. In Year 3, students complete a major dissertation in either English language, bilingual studies, or creative writing. Alongside this, they select advanced optional modules that further develop specialist interests. Creative writing options include scriptwriting, writing and environments, speculative and supernatural writing, journalism, and writers’ room projects, while English language options cover bilingualism, psycholinguistics, language acquisition, speech and language therapy, discourse analysis, and language change. The program develops strong analytical, creative, and communication skills for careers in writing, education, media, publishing, and related fields.
