COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) English Language and English Literature is a three-year degree that combines the study of language structure, use, and theory with the historical and critical study of literary texts, with students completing 120 credits each year. In Year 1, students build core academic skills through compulsory modules in reading, thinking and writing, and language and culture, while balancing study between English language and English literature. Introductory options allow students to explore grammar, phonetics, meaning, and key literary genres such as medieval literature, comedy, gothic, and children’s fiction. Year 2 develops analytical depth through compulsory modules in the history of English and discourse analysis, alongside literary history modules spanning medieval to contemporary periods. Students also choose language-focused options covering linguistics, multilingualism, language structure, teaching, and research, with limited additional literature options. In Year 3, students complete a substantial dissertation or final-year project in either English language or English literature, shaping the balance of their remaining modules. Advanced options include psycholinguistics, bilingualism, language acquisition, corpus linguistics, and speech and language therapy, alongside specialist literature modules across historical periods and digital publishing. The program develops strong critical, linguistic, research, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in education, publishing, media, research, and related fields.
