COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Criminal Justice is a three-year degree requiring students to complete 120 credits per year while developing a critical understanding of crime, justice, and social responses to offending. In Year 1, students study compulsory modules covering policing, vulnerability and risk, working for justice, and core introductions to criminology and criminal justice, with the option to study in English or Welsh. Students also take a sociology module to build a broader understanding of society and social change. Year 2 strengthens theoretical and methodological knowledge through compulsory study of digital policing and e-crime, crime and justice in modern Britain, criminological theory, and social and political research, again with language choice where available. Students then select optional modules that explore areas such as criminal law, poverty and inequality, crime and the media, contemporary social debates, or power and society, with the opportunity to undertake a work placement. In Year 3, students complete a substantial dissertation and take core modules examining youth crime and the process from crime to punishment. Alongside these, a wide range of optional modules allows specialisation in areas such as organised crime, forensic psychology, race and democracy, globalisation, inequality, and policing. The program develops strong analytical, research, and practical skills for careers in criminal justice, policy, research, and related fields.
