COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing program is designed to develop skilled, reflective, and versatile writers across a range of forms and genres. In Year 1, students build strong foundations in reading, critical thinking, language, and creative practice through compulsory modules in prose, poetry, and literary analysis. These are supported by optional modules exploring literary genres such as Gothic, comedy, medieval literature, children’s fiction, and introductory screenwriting, allowing students to experiment with different styles and narrative traditions. Year 2 focuses on developing advanced writing techniques and sustained creative projects, with compulsory modules in poetry and short fiction, novel writing, and creative non-fiction. Students further tailor their studies through optional modules including experimental writing, screenwriting, community arts placements, and professional practice, helping to connect creative work with real-world contexts and audiences. In Year 3, students complete a substantial creative writing dissertation, producing an extended original work supported by critical reflection. Alongside this, they choose from advanced modules that explore writing environments, fantasy and the supernatural, creative non-fiction, digital publishing, journalism, and industry-focused screenwriting. Opportunities to study modules in English or Welsh further enhance flexibility. Overall, the program encourages creative risk-taking, critical awareness, and professional development, preparing graduates for careers in writing, publishing, media, community arts, and related creative industries, as well as for further postgraduate study.
