COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Creative Writing and Modern Languages is a three-year degree that combines literary creativity with advanced language study, requiring students to complete 120 credits each year. In Year 1, students build foundations through compulsory modules in language and culture, prose, and poetry, alongside optional modules that develop critical reading and intercultural awareness. They also choose one modern language pathway, such as Chinese, German, French, or Spanish, at beginner or advanced level, completing 40 credits in that language. Year 2 deepens linguistic competence through a compulsory 40-credit language skills module and expands creative practice through core creative writing modules in poetry, fiction, novels, or non-fiction, with additional options like experimental writing or screenwriting. Students also select optional modern language modules exploring literature, cinema, history, and culture. In Year 3, students reach advanced language proficiency through a further compulsory language module and complete 60 credits of creative writing, which may include a dissertation project, scriptwriting, or specialist writing themes such as the fantastic or environmental writing. Optional modern language modules allow further cultural, translation, or dissertation-based study. Overall, the program develops strong writing, analytical, linguistic, and intercultural skills.
