COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies program is structured over three years, with students completing 120 credits annually. In Year 1, students develop foundational knowledge and academic skills through modules such as Research Skills, Children’s Rights: Perspectives and Practice, Adventures in Growing Up, Children and Society, and Literacy for Life, alongside Skills for Learning and Work and a community-focused enterprise project. Year 2 builds on this foundation by focusing on professional practice and key developmental themes, including Inclusion and Learning Needs, Researching Childhood, Developing Effective Practice, Emotional Health and Wellbeing, Parenthood, and Positive Behavioural Support. These modules strengthen understanding of children’s development, family contexts, and strategies to support diverse needs. In Year 3, students undertake a Dissertation to demonstrate independent research skills and study advanced topics such as Identities in Childhood and Youth and Substance Abuse in Families. They also select optional modules, choosing from areas such as Counselling Skills, Working with Vulnerable Families, or Multilingualism in Childhood. Overall, the program combines research, theory, and applied practice to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively with children, young people, and families across educational, social care, and community settings.
