COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies and Sociology program is structured over three years, with students completing 120 credits each year through a combination of compulsory and optional modules. In Year 1, students study core topics including Children’s Rights, Adventures in Growing Up, Social Divisions, Introduction to Sociology, and Social Policy and Society, alongside skills-based and community project modules. Some modules are available in either English or Welsh. Year 2 develops research knowledge and theoretical understanding through modules in Social and Political Research, Classical Social Theory, and Inclusion and Learning Needs. Students then select optional modules from education and social sciences, such as Emotional Health and Wellbeing, Parenthood, Poverty and Inequality, or Contemporary Social and Political Debates. A work placement option is also available. In Year 3, students study Globalisation and Social Change and Theorising Society Today, before choosing from a wide range of optional modules in areas such as counselling, youth identity, substance abuse, crime, housing policy, climate change, and political ideology. A final-year placement option is available if not taken earlier. The program ensures balanced study across disciplines and semesters while developing research, analytical, and professional skills relevant to careers in social and community settings.
