COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies and Psychology is an interdisciplinary program that explores child and adolescent development through social, educational, and psychological perspectives. In Year 1, students develop a broad foundation by studying childhood, society, communication and literacy, alongside core psychology modules covering brain and mind, language disorders, criminal psychology, stress, mental health, and scientific communication skills. This year builds essential academic, analytical, and research abilities while introducing key theories of development and behaviour. Year 2 deepens understanding of children and young people within family, educational, and health contexts through compulsory modules in inclusion and learning needs, emotional and mental wellbeing, parenthood, and a comprehensive suite of psychology modules including developmental, cognitive, biological, behavioural, personality, and clinical psychology. Together, these modules provide an integrated view of how biological, cognitive, emotional, and social factors influence development. In Year 3, students specialise by selecting balanced optional modules from both Childhood and Youth Studies and Psychology. Education-focused options address areas such as vulnerable families, multilingualism, identity, and substance abuse, while psychology options span neuroscience, mental processes, counselling skills, health psychology, forensic psychology, and applied behaviour analysis. An additional optional module in neuroaesthetics is available in English or Welsh. The program prepares graduates for careers in education, youth work, social care, psychology-related roles, and further professional or postgraduate study.
